CAAA DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING VALUE STATEMENT

The Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) commits to practices that support equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging in all our activities. The CAAA also commits to supporting and promoting these values in the Canadian accounting research, education, and practice communities. The CAAA recognizes that there are many dimensions to diversity. These include gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, career stage, language, and research and education paradigms.

The CAAA recognizes that, as a Canadian organization, we have special responsibilities to decolonize and to practice reconciliation, in alignment with the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The CAAA also recognizes its responsibility to be part of the wider context of decolonizing and Indigenizing higher education, academic programs and scholarship in Canada.

The CAAA acknowledges that the accounting profession, the accounting academy, and post-secondary institutions have been developed within paradigms that include heteronormativity, ableism, cultural conditioning and cultural hegemony, implicit bias, and racism. These paradigms also represent a construct of meritocracy designed to prioritize a status quo and to exclude, underprivilege and under-represent certain groups and individuals.

The CAAA acknowledges our privileged position as an association situated in these constructed paradigms.

The CAAA commits to supporting a culture of learning, listening, creativity, respectful consultation and open dialogue to provide the safe space necessary to develop our practices in equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging and apply them in all our activities.

The CAAA commits to critically reviewing our activities to develop wise practices in equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging; to integrating them into our infrastructure, processes, and organizational philosophy; and to reporting on these efforts to the membership.
